Contextual Studies

Contextual Studies:
I chose to research Minimalism, below are the spreads from the booklet that I made..

We also had to find a logo/brand that we liked – find out what typeface was used, and create it into a poster:

I decided to choose Vogue as I think it always looks stunningly designed/laid out – it's also a very well-known magazine.

One word poster

Our first project that we were given was to create a one word poster, to choose a word from a list which we were given. I decided for my final design to use the word 'Vanity'.

"Let me make myself absolutely clear.."

We were told when designing this poster to have the mindset of the quote: "Let me make myself absolutely clear."

Below is a list of the words which we were given to choose from:

Regal
Nexus
Trace
Oppress
Metamorphosis
Rot
Peace
Pour
Minor
Love
Taboo
Look
Harm
Sustainable
Youth
Thank

Start
Grow
No
Vanity
Parody
Unit
Vanish
Hostile
Zoom
Intelligence
Argue
Hope
Break
Ironic
Communicate
Celebrate

I had a few other outcomes for the word peace, which I have displayed below:

Inspiration

I found this image while I was working on the One Word poster project, it tied in with my initial ideas surrounding the 'Peace' sign. The colours used work nicely together, and I like that it looks hand rendered, with the words written personally.
I thought this was clever, I found this while I was looking through at other posters which were very minimalistic – the sort of outcome I wanted for my One Word poster. I like that only 3 colours have been used, and how well it conveys the message across.
Again another clever design, the link between rain and an umbrella – also the link between the colour scheme

Image - Unknowing the City

Third project given: Image, Unknowing the City.
Image project, Unknowing the City.
We had to pick one of the following territories:

- Higher/Lower
- Echoed
- Diversity
- Space
- Underbelly
- Ephemeral
- Geometric forms
- Language

I chose Echoed, and thought it would be a visually pleasing way to create a poster about haunted areas in Norwich, I found there were quite a few places which had been reported to be haunted.

I used the long-exposure setting on a Digital SLR Camera, and photographed my friend walking through the streets of places which had been highlighted as haunted. I then overlayed these images to another photograph of the area without the long-exposure setting.
I added words associated with spirits around the whole poster, and changed the opacity so it was very light - something which is also associated with ghosts - something you rarely see.
